This is the kinda article that really pisses me off! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8289295.stm Tracey Emin threatening to leave the UK because of the increase of high end tax band to 50%. My 1st thoughts were I couldn't care less. It brought back Mysterian memories of Chris, Ruth. Murdo-Mac and Myself having a good chuckle in the office when we heard that a lot of Emin's work (and similar conteporary crap) had gone up in smoke in Charles Saachi's Warehouse fire.
What particularly annoys me in all of this is the misconception that people who earn a lot of money work hard to to earn this money and low tax rates is the incentive to drive people to work hard to succeed in life. Sorry Tracey but there is no way you work as hard as the millions of people in this country who work 2 jobs just to make ends meet for their families. You prob get up when you want, start work when you feel like it and finish when you feel like it, take holidays anywhere in the word when you feel like it.
There is a fine line to walk with taxation of the rich, in the 70s taxation in UK was so high quite a few high end earners went into exile, when Jackie Stewart speaks about this you understand that taxation of 90%+ was unfair and did correctly force him into Tax exile in Switzerland. However there has to be a balance and if I was earning say over £150K per year I would accept that it was fair that I paid a higher percentage on tax (Bonus Points to Frank Skinner on this as he has publically applauded the 50% rate as somebody who will end up paying the 50%)
One of the ironies is that the more money you make the more money you have available to avoid paying tax. The UK gov don't have a clue how many UK Citizens are abroad avoiding paying tax in this Country but current estimates are 12 million. If I had my way I would banish any UK citizen living in Tax exile from entering the country, or at very least reduce their allowance of days in UK, for a start don't exclude travel time, include the 2 days where u enter and leave country as time in uk.
ok, thats enough... rant over!
